Quick Guide to Understanding Your Surfing Level
At what level are you on your surfing journey ?BEGINNER
Beginner surfers are new to the sport and have limited experience riding waves. They are still learning the fundamentals of paddling, standing up on the board, and riding waves. Common mistakes include struggling with balance, timing, wave selection, and positioning on the board. Additionally, they may not follow proper guidance, which can pose dangers to themselves and others. To progress, building a solid foundation is crucial. Focus on proper paddling technique, improving balance, and becoming comfortable in the water. Practicing basic maneuvers, wave selection, and seeking guidance from an instructor can help improve skills and build confidence.
INTERMEDIATE
Intermediate surfers have a certain amount of experience and are more comfortable in the water. They can paddle out to the lineup and position themselves in the lineup. Common mistakes include struggling with maneuvers, wave selection, and not being able to read the ocean conditions. To progress to an intermediate/advanced surfer, they need to focus on honing their technique, practicing more maneuver simulation, and improving their wave selection and positioning. Building strength and endurance through exercise and maintaining consistency in surfing can help to progress. Seeking guidance from experienced coaches can be beneficial in improving skills and developing a more personalized approach to surfing.
INTERMEDIATE / ADVANCED
Intermediate / Advanced surfer has a strong foundation and can perform maneuvers like bottom turns and cutbacks. They have the ability to read and select waves and have a good understanding of the ocean. Common mistakes include lacking variety in their maneuvers, struggling in larger or more powerful conditions, and not being able to consistently perform their maneuvers. To progress to an advanced surfer, they need to focus on expanding their repertoire of maneuvers and refining their technique. Building strength and endurance through exercise and maintaining consistency in surfing is crucial. Continuing to seek guidance from experienced coaches and challenging themselves with different types of waves and conditions can also help them progress.
ADVANCED
Advanced surfer has a deep understanding of the ocean and can consistently perform maneuvers in a wide range of conditions. They have a well-developed style and can read waves and conditions. Common mistakes include overconfidence, not continuing to develop their skills, and not adapting to new conditions. To progress, advanced surfers need to continue refining their technique, pushing the limits of their abilities, and consistently seeking new challenges. Maintaining a healthy and fit lifestyle is also essential to continue improving. Traveling to different surf spots and experimenting with new equipment or wave types can also contribute to continued growth and development as a surfer.
